Charles Blackman 1928-2018

Charles Blackman is a widely celebrated Australian artist who was an excellent draughtsman and painter. He often created series of work based on personal, literary and musical themes such as ‘Schoolgirls’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’.

Blackman was one of the Heidelberg School artists along with Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker and Joy Hester centred around the home of art patrons John and Sunday Reed, at Heide. Blackman was awarded the Helena Rubenstein Travelling Scholarship and moved to London for six years. He also spent a year in Paris when he won the Cité des Artes scholarship.

Blackman has exhibited at the Whitechapel Gallery and the Tate Gallery in London. Blackman’s work is held in all major public collections in Australia with The Art Gallery of NSW holding over 50 works in their collection. Blackman has also been included in international collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
