Catherine Stewart has spent the majority of her life living in country NSW and Victoria. She is a keen observer of nature and is known for her paintings of Australia’s native flowers and the birds that they attract. Stewart has a genuine love of the outback with its vast open plains, valleys and river beds. She takes her camera and sketchbook with her when she travels, spending time observing the shifts in nature and capturing the changing light throughout the day.
Stewart travelled to Nilpena Station in South Australia for an artists retreat in 2018 and whilst there she captured the beauty of the rugged landscape while working Plein Air. The works on paper capture the undulating mountains, valleys and plains that are typical of the Flinders Rangers area. Stewart has used a subtle palette by using washes of watercolour, pops of gouache and details added with pastel. These works have been framed in a thin oak frame and are hand stained with a wax finish.
